I just walked in the house to find my 2 1/2 year old screaming because she didn't want to nap, a very common occurrence in our house. I went into her room, sat down next to her and began to calmly read this story. Almost immediately she began to settle down and listen. I was lightly stroking her hair as I read and she was looking at the pictures while listening to my voice. By the time, I finished the story she was very still and calm. I whispered to her that it's nap time honey. She laid down and as I left the room she was fast asleep.This is an excellent book to read to kids not only to help calm them down but as a way to remind them how much we do love and cherish them. Sometimes it's hard for us as fathers to express emotions because we are not necessarily built that way. With this book, all we have to do is read and they will get the message. Thanks Larry for this gem. It truly is an expression of kindness to our children.

Every page repeats the same 4 lines at the end of the page about Daddy loving and protecting you. It would be better if the repetitive part was shorter - maybe 1-2 lines instead. It makes the book take too long to get through at night time. Maybe it will grow on me over time by for now my son loses interest as it keeps repeating itself.
The title is repeated throughout the book. It's repetition will do well to remind kids that their dad is there to love and protect them. For kids with dads that leave often for business or military service, this book can have great impact on their longing for their dads return.
The artwork tells the story in a simple and fun way making it fun for both reader and listener.
This is a must have for any family that wants their kids to know that "daddy will always love and protect you"
My boys (ages 5 and 3) and I love this book. It's nicely illustrated (my boys love the bear characters) and the story breaks new ground in the children's books category in that it's all about a dad and his thoughts about/interactions with his young son. It's a great, calming read for your kids and will serve to let them know that they're basically always on your mind, no matter what's going on. Good stuff - looking forward to more from Mr. Hagner.
If it were possible I would give it a sixth star. It exceeded my expectations. As a Fathers Day gift to my seven year old, the ultimate gift was received by me. Half way into the book tears were welling up in my boy's eyes. By the end of the book, we were both crying tears of joy - tears of love for one another. Thank you Larry for writing this book, and giving a father and his son the best Fathers Day a man could ever ask for.
I love the content of this book. It is fantastic and as a child therapist I particularly enjoy the way it helps fathers express words to their children that they need to hear, but are often difficult for men to find. My only critique is that it is so flimsy. I want this book to last a long time. Maybe a thicker cover.
Finally a book specifically for dads to read to their kids! I love reading to my kids but have been frustrated by the number of "mommy" books out there and lack of books that are focused on the special relationship between a father and his children. This book fills that void and I love reading it to my kids. Thanks, Larry, for creating this awesome book!
After buying this book, I started reading it to my two year old. Immediately after reading the first page my seven year old and ten year old stopped what they were doing to gather around me in a circle as they also wanted to know what daddy was reading.
Not only is this book is an attention grabber for the children, it also accurately captures and communicates the feelings fathers have while raising children. Additionally by reading this book it left me with a healthy power statement or mantra that I can use to better myself as a father.
Currently this book is my two year old's goto book and he is frequently asking for "More Bears."
