A few things are certain past the age of forty. Taking on a new career is futile. Finding a bolt of lightning piercing through you is more probable than finding love. You appear invisible yet irritating to anyone under thirty, while your body is migrating south faster than the polar ice caps. Yet Allyson Beckwith allowed her restlessness to change her career…her circumstances…and discover her “anam cara” or soul mate, a man she sensed long before she knew.
A chance encounter with Will Robertson, a hot, young, British born, Hollywood actor, presents her with the opportunity for change she’s been craving. Embarking in the unfamiliar world of celebrity, she finds herself becoming a mentor, business adviser, and Will’s personal assistant. Navigating the artistic, struggling, and yet naive, pop idols’ life, Allyson meets a cast of comedic and colorful characters who recognize Allyson’s dual talents of compassion and business savvy.
Allyson follows fate to a chance encounter with Will’s new financial attorney, Irish born Peter Gallaway. The two set out to explore their “unusual” ties and the irresistible attraction that leads them to the love of their lives...past, present and future.
Design for Change Anam Cara Series Book 1 edition by Stella Murphy Romance eBooks
Allyson Beckwith has always been a "go with the flow" kind of woman. When you're presented with an opportunity, you're meant to take it. It's fate sending you in the right direction. This belief has served her well during her 42 years. Allyson has never married and doesn't regret that decision at all. She has no qualms about switching careers. She's lived her life the way she wanted and is very proud of her accomplishments.Although she doesn't know it, Allyson's life is about to drastically change. The impetus is something as innocuous as a book and a movie.
Allyson and her employees are eagerly awaiting the release of a movie adaptation of book one of a popular series. She's aware of the novels, but only reads the book so she can have a frame of reference for the movie she's about to see. She's immediately drawn into the book and finishes it in a single evening. Once she sees the movie, she becomes completely immersed and borderline obsessed with the film and its young star William Robertson. The obsession isn't sexual in nature. She's simply drawn to the movie and its star for some inexplicable reason.
Unless you've been living under a pop culture rock, the book and movie are quite obviously modeled after the "Twilight" series. William Robertson is a Robert Pattinson-esque actor - young, English and about to be overwhelmed by the mania the movie generates.
On a business trip to Atlanta, Allyson spots a disguised William Robertson in the airport. Will is all alone and is obviously desperate to keep his identity a secret. She knows instinctively that he's overwhelmed with the pressures of the movie's success and needs help in the form of a personal assistant. Allyson doesn't see this as a chance encounter. It's fate presenting an opportunity for change. She approaches Will and offers him her services as a personal assistant. It's the first step in a series of events that will change Allyson's life forever.
A rather large portion of the book focuses on the duties performed by a personal assistant for a Hollywood star. It was interesting, but I found that Allyson was way too competent for someone who had no experience in the industry and was new to California. To say she's efficient would be like saying Mother Teresa was nice.
At her first private industry party, Allyson sees a man she's instantly drawn to. Her soul recognizes him not just as an attractive man but as someone she's known and loved before. They don't speak to each other, but his effect on Allyson is profound. Since fate is working overtime on Allyson's life, it's not surprising that the mystery man from the party is Peter Gallaway, the financial planner she's scheduled to meet with the next day. Peter also feels their soul connection and doesn't hold back his wants or desires. His Irish heritage tells him Allyson is his Anam Cara or "soul mate." Allyson struggles with finding the right balance between her devotion to Will and building a future with Peter.
I really liked this book, but there was something missing and therefore I can't give it a 5 star rating. I loved the concept of soul mates finding and recognizing each other. Allyson and Peter's love scenes were subtle and I would have enjoyed something a little more graphic. The book's conclusion was a little "off." There's a "happily ever after" for Allyson and Peter, but the threads of Will's storyline are left hanging. The arrival of Allyson's colleague from Michigan and her antics late in the book still have me scratching my head. What was her purpose? Unless there's a sequel planned and she's prominently featured, her character was a waste of space.
Overall, I recommend this book. It earned its 4-star rating.

Design for Change Anam Cara Series Book 1 edition by Stella Murphy Romance eBooks Reviews
In Design for Change the character development and interaction was well developed. The supporting characters added humor and would make great main characters in a next book. Great modern romance novel!
